SAVON DE MARSEILLE

Sizes

Savon De Marseille is a hand crafted soap made in the South of France. Marseille, pronounced (mar-say) is located on the south east coast on the Mediterranean Sea.  For over 600 years soap makers have been crafting this traditional vegetable oil based soap.  In 1924 there were approximately 132 soap factories.  In 2000 there were only 5 remaining.  Over the years, France has enacted strict laws that declare only soaps crafted using the ancient methods and containing only the purest ingredients shall bear the name, “Savon de Marseille.”

It takes the Maitre de Savon (soap master) two weeks to craft Marseille Soap. This delicate mixture, comprised of 72% olive or palm oil, alkaline ash (from sea plants) and saltwater from the Mediterranean Sea, is formed into a paste and then heated for ten days in antique cauldrons while being stirred constantly. This mixture is allowed to cool until it is ready to pour into the mould and then allowed to slightly set.  It is then washed to eliminate the soda. While still soft, it is finally cut into bars and stamped and left to completely harden. This whole process can take up to a month before the soap is ready for use.
